France stresses the importance of activating the Sinjar Agreement and continuing its support for the Yazidis
Shafaq News/ The French Consul in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region, Olivier Dikotini, stressed on Wednesday the importance of activating the Sinjar Agreement between Baghdad and Erbil.
This came during his meeting with the representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Vian Dakhil, according to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency. "During the meeting, the most important developments in the political arena were discussed," the statement said.
Dakhil pointed to "the great French role in helping the displaced in the camps through programs and humanitarian aid and the rehabilitation program for survivors, and the importance of the continuation of these programs and aid by the French state."
The French consul, in turn, affirmed, "France's continued support for minorities in Iraq, especially the Yazidis, in the belief that what happened to them is a genocide that needs a pause from the entire international community," stressing that "this tragedy should not be abandoned, especially since after more than seven years have passed. Many of the missing are still unaccounted for, and thousands of families are still in the camps."
It was also emphasized, according to the statement, "the importance of activating the Sinjar Agreement and taking care of Sinjar's infrastructure in preparation for the return of its residents."
On (October 9, 2020), Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement to normalize the situation in Sinjar, providing for joint administration of the judiciary in terms of administrative, security and service aspects.
ISIS had invaded Sinjar district in 2014 and committed a massacre against its residents, before the Peshmerga forces retook it the following year.
However, the Iraqi army, backed by the Popular Mobilization Forces, invaded the area due to the tension between the region and the federal government against the backdrop of the independence referendum in 2017. The Iraqi authorities installed new officials in the judiciary to replace the elected officials who withdrew from the area to Dohuk governorate when the Iraqi forces advanced.
There are currently two local administrations for Sinjar, one of which was appointed by the authorities of the federal government, and the second is the elected government, which conducts its business from the governorate of Dohuk.
The anti-Ankara Kurdistan Workers' Party has also formed a loyal faction there called the "Sinjar Protection Units" and receives salaries from the Iraqi government as a faction under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilization.
