The Iraqi judiciary is taking action against a group affiliated with the Baath Party
Shafaq News/ The Supreme Judicial Council announced, on Wednesday, that the Nineveh Investigation Court decided to arrest a group of defendants affiliated with the so-called (Baath Party) organization in Bashiqa district.
In a statement received by Shafak News Agency, the council stated that this group "has previously appeared in a video recording celebrating and glorifying the former regime leader (Saddam Hussein)."
According to the statement, the members of this group "confessed to planning to reorganize the party and to carry out actions that harm the existing political system."
In July 2016, the Iraqi parliament approved a draft law banning the Baath Party, dissolved entities, parties, and racist, terrorist and takfiri activities.
The party ruled for nearly four decades in Iraq, and for most of this period it confronted the head of the pyramid of power, former President Saddam Hussein, before he was overthrown by the United States of America and its allies in the third Gulf War in 2003.
The Baath regime during the era of "Hussein" committed many crimes that were classified by the competent criminal court in Iraq as "crimes of genocide", and it sentenced the late president and officials close to him to death by hanging.
