The Iraqi parliament member, Shawan Clary, stressed, on Tuesday, the need for the Iraqi government to protect the oil fields as a national wealth, and to bear the responsibility for security in the areas from which the missiles targeting these fields are launched.
The Kormor gas field in Qadir Karam district, Chamchamal district in Sulaymaniyah governorate, was attacked by three missiles yesterday evening, which did not leave any material or human damage, and they fell outside the field.
Yesterday's attack was the fourth of its kind during the months of June and July. Before that, an oil refinery south of Erbil had been targeted by a missile attack.
Representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Shwan Clary, said that “one of the first tasks of the federal government is to provide security for the country’s institutions, including the oil fields and institutions, as they are a national wealth, and to bear the responsibility for security in the areas from which the missiles targeting these fields are launched.”
He explained, "These attacks are aimed at creating chaos and putting pressure on the Kurdistan Region to make concessions on political issues, as well as straining relations between Erbil and Baghdad and thwarting the efforts of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to reach solutions with Baghdad regarding outstanding issues, including the oil file."
He added, by saying, "It also aims to create problems and intimidate foreign companies operating, and hit the economy of the Kurdistan Region and its sources of income."
He added, "The militias that want to create chaos and sedition behind these attacks must be identified and condemned, especially since there has been remarkable progress in relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and efforts have intensified to reach solutions to the existing disputes, so these militias and those behind them are trying to thwart these efforts."
The Kurdistan Regional Government condemned, on Monday evening, the missile attack that targeted the Kormore gas field, and called on the federal government to prevent the recurrence of these attacks.
Kurdistan Regional Government spokesman Jotiar Adel said in a statement: "We strongly condemn the attack once again launched by the militias and outlaw armed groups on the Kormur (Khormur) gas field."
"We call on the federal government to take the necessary measures to curb these terrorist attacks and prevent their recurrence, especially since these repeated attacks aim to undermine security and stability throughout Iraq and economic prosperity in the Kurdistan Region," he added.
