Yesterday, Saturday, the Ministry of Water Resources called on the local government of Basra Governorate to divert the sewage estuary away from the Shatt al-Arab to preserve it from pollutants. A statement issued by the ministry, received by Al-Mada, stated:
The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, inspected the work underway by the ministry’s formations in implementing the first phase of the Basra pipeline project, accompanied on the visit by the technical advisor to the ministry and a number of general managers and directors of the ministry’s formations in the governorate, during which he conducted a tour of the canal’s path for a field view of the executed works. and pipes equipped for the project.
Al-Hamdani said, according to the statement, "The visit comes to review the works in the project, especially after the arrival of the pipelines to implement the first phase of the project and start the station's work."
He added, "The ministry's staff is mobilized to complete the work within a record period, as well as follow up on the quantities of water supplied to Basra Governorate through the canal." Al-Hamdani pointed out that "these owners are continuing to implement this important and vital project, despite all the challenges it faces."
He stressed, "The project provides a fixed water share of good quality and quantity for Basra Governorate by converting the canal from open to closed to transport water by pipes."
Al-Hamdani stressed that "this method is adopted by the Ministry at the present time to transfer water in its current projects to reduce water losses and prevent encroachment on water quotas by outlaws and violators."
He noted, "The ministry and all of its staff receive support from Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, to carry out its duties and the works entrusted to it, preserve water wealth and ensure its fair distribution to everyone and according to the entitlement of each governorate."
Al-Hamdani went on to say that “the work of pumping water towards Basra Governorate is continuing,” calling on “the local government to divert the sewage estuary away from the Shatt al-Arab to preserve it from pollutants.”
The ministry's statement confirmed that "through its companies, it is implementing the critical part of the Basra pipeline project, which amounts to 55 km as a first stage, as the total length of the project is 220.5 km."
The statement explained, "The project starts from the innovation regulator in Dhi Qar and to the sedimentation basins in Basra, with a discharge of 21 m3/s."
The statement pointed out that "the project consists of a main pumping station, four beehives, and four pipelines to transport water, each with a diameter of 2 m, one of them to the center of the city of Nasiriyah and the rest to the province of Basra."
And the government media cell announced, in the middle of last week, that the water channel in Basra Governorate had been sabotaged by a group of violators of the law.
The cell said in an official statement received by (Al-Mada), that "in conjunction with the anniversary of the tenth of Muharram and around one o'clock after midnight last night, the trespassers broke the shoulders of the channel within (Km9). The statement added, "The aim of the sabotage operation is to deprive the people of Basra Governorate of water, but the security forces stationed on the canal proceeded to arrest the perpetrators." He pointed out that "the staff of the Ministry of Water Resources, who are working around the clock, were able to repair the bridge, restore the canal to its normal position, and pump water and deliver it to all those who deserve it in the governorate."
The statement went on, "The Minister of Water Resources directed that legal measures be taken against the violators, calling on the Iraqi judiciary to take the most severe penalties against them."
The Director of the National Center for Water Resources Management, Hatem Hamid, had said in previous statements, "The Ministry of Water Resources is subjected to two types of water abuse."
Hamid added, "The abuses are sometimes by citizens, and at other times they are by local administrations."
Hamid explained, "One of the abuses of the local administration is what the governor of Babylon did a while ago by opening a regulator, but this problem was solved and the regulator was reorganized according to the operational plans prepared by the Ministry of Water Resources."
And he stated, "A part of the citizens who are in the rivers consume more water than the water rations allocated to them, which reduces the quotas of those who are in the back of the rivers."
Hamid continues, "The ministry is conducting a campaign to remove the abuses, as we were able during this year to reduce the abuses in order to deliver the water quotas to the rivers."
And he spoke, "It is possible to say that the rate of overtaking is much lower than it was in previous years."
