The Iranian military leadership revealed its continuation of its operations in the Kurdistan region to pursue what it described as terrorists who pose a threat to its security, stressing its monitoring of US bases, threatening to take any action against it from Iraqi territory.
The Chairman of the Iranian Joint Chiefs of Staff, Lieutenant-General Mohammad Bagheri, said in a statement published by the Iranian newspaper (Iran Front page), that "the Iranian armed forces are monitoring US bases in the Kurdistan region of Iraq," adding that his country's forces "will continue military operations there."
Bagheri added, "Iran knows exactly the location of the American bases, the number of forces stationed there, as well as what it is doing in the military sites."
He pointed out, "Iran will, from now on, respond to any move by the United States in Iraq to confront Iranian drones."
Baqeri talked about what he considered anti-Iranian terrorist groups present inside Iraqi territory, stressing that his country will not "tolerant of the presence of 3,000 armed soldiers equipped with bombs behind its borders and will confront them." General Bagheri indicated that Iran will continue its operations outside the borders.
Baqeri went on, according to the Iranian journalist, that his country's government "informed the Kurdistan region of Iraq that it has two options: to disarm these groups or expel them from the region." The Iranian newspaper acknowledges, according to the report translated by (Al-Mada), that its country’s forces “bombed several times groups it described as hostile to it in the Kurdistan region, and accused these groups of being involved in unrest and riots inside Iranian territory in recent weeks.”
This comes in conjunction with the arrival of National Security Adviser Qassem Al-Araji to Iran two days ago to discuss joint security files and his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian.
Al-Araji said, according to Iranian media, that "the Iraqi constitution does not allow the activities of people and movements that threaten neighboring countries."
Al-Araji added, "Any measures hostile to security against Iran will be met with the actions of the central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government," stressing that "Iraq considers Iran's security its own."
For his part, the Iranian Foreign Minister stressed the "importance of expanding relations with Iraq in all fields, especially security cooperation," calling for "the need to deal with those he described as armed terrorists inside Iraqi territory."
Abdullahian pointed out that “the relations between the two countries are strategic and distinct,” considering that “the security of Iraq is the security of Iran,” explaining: “Given the good relations between the Islamic Republic and the Republic of Iraq, we do not expect the territory of the Kurdistan region of Iraq to be a place for terrorist acts and threats against Iran".
He called on the Iraqi authorities to "bear full responsibility in dealing" with what he called "terrorist and separatist groups that threaten Iran's security from the Kurdistan region of Iraq."
Abdullahian added, "We have always wanted a prosperous, free and independent Iraq, and we want nothing but good for the Iraqi government and nation, but we will not tolerate the continued armed presence of terrorists in the Kurdistan region and their actions against Iran's security."
The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced at the end of last month that it had summoned the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad, and handed him a strongly worded protest note regarding the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's bombing of sites inside the Kurdistan region.
This action took place, after sources in the Erbil Health Department reported that seven people were killed and 24 others wounded, as a result of Iranian bombing that targeted separate areas in the Kurdistan Region.
