Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani confirmed today, Monday (February 19, 2024), that Iranian-Iraqi relations are at their best, stressing that the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people must make a decision regarding the presence of American forces on their lands.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in his press conference, followed by “Baghdad Today”: “We have two elections ahead of us for the Islamic Shura Council and leadership experts, and we are certain that the Iranian people will have a strong presence to achieve another victory for the revolution and the country.”
Kanaani added, "In light of the government's view of expanding relations with Asian countries, we have witnessed a noticeable dynamism in Iran's foreign relations, and the focus on developing relations with neighbors has shown an introduction in light of the development of economic relations. In addition to neighboring countries, we also have relations with distant countries."
He continued, "The government has put the development of economically oriented relations on its agenda, and we hope that we will be able to meet the aspirations of the Iranian people and improve economic conditions in foreign relations and the people's livelihood."
Regarding Iranian-Iraqi relations, Kanaani added, "Relations between the two countries are at their best, and the future prospects of the two countries are full of hope and promising. The two governments have a common will in the economic and commercial fields, and they also have a common will in the field of security on the common borders."
He stated that "the joint committees are active in implementing the security agreement between the two countries, and we consider the full implementation of the provisions of this document in the direction of achieving the interests of the two countries and enhancing security and stability in the two countries. We do not consider that the presence of foreign forces in Iraq helps stability in this country, and we fundamentally oppose the presence of foreign forces." In the region, we believe that with regard to the presence of American forces in Iraq, the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people must make a decision.”
Regarding the start of building a road in the Gaza Strip and the intensification of the attack on Rafah, Kanaani stressed that “today has passed 136 days since the cruel war launched by the Israeli entity, with the support of the United States, against the Palestinian people, a war that unfortunately showed that human rights, as countries claim, are demanded by promoting their empire.” The media is nothing more than a blatant lie, as the disaster in Gaza has removed the mask from the faces of false human rights claimants.”
He continued, "The Zionist entity is now accused of committing genocide crimes before the International Court of Justice, and American movements continue to save the Israeli entity. We have said many times that if there is no support from America, even the Zionist entity will not be able to continue the war for a single day."
He stated, "The new resolution proposed by Algeria is also being discussed in the Security Council. Unfortunately, the United States has previously announced its opposition to this resolution. We must see to what extent the Security Council can fulfill its responsibility to stop crimes in Gaza, and the diplomacy of the leaders and the dynamic diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not stopped for a single moment." “We hold the Organization of Islamic Cooperation seriously responsible in this regard.”
Regarding South Africa’s request before the International Court of Justice, Kanaani added, “We thank the South African government for its responsible behavior,” noting that “the court faces a serious test, and the initial ruling of the International Court of Justice has created a serious responsibility on the Israeli entity to stop all its criminal actions.”
