Yesterday, Sunday, the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces announced the issuance of orders to touch the zero line on the borders with Turkey and Iran, pointing to the start of handing over the security file in cities to the police forces.
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief, Yahya Rasool, said in a press conference followed by Al-Mada, that “the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shia’ Al-Sudani, stressed during the security ministerial meeting the need to control the borders from the border guards and the zero line with neighboring Iran and Turkey.”
Rasool pointed out, "The importance of strengthening the leadership of the Border Guard forces with weapons, equipment and people, to ensure that the borders are well maintained."
He stressed, "Iraq refuses to use its land to attack any neighboring country," pointing out that "Iraq has good relations with all neighboring countries, and we seek to develop them in a way that serves the interests of the parties, with the need to respect Iraq's sovereignty."
Rasool pointed out that "strengthening the borders is entrusted to the military command, and the important thing is to maintain the borders and the zero line."
He stressed, "The work is continuing according to the directives of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in order to maintain security, stability and sovereignty of Iraq."
Regarding handing over the cities file to the police, Rasool said, "The directives that were issued include that the Iraqi police forces should be responsible for maintaining security within cities."
And he continues, "The Ministry of Interior is capable of maintaining security and has all the joints through which it can maintain internal security in cities."
And Rasool stated that "the army must leave the cities and be in its own camps for reorganization," noting that "the army has a duty to defend Iraq in the event of any threat on its territory."
And the military spokesman continues, "The steps are taking place in a precise manner, and the process of replacing some sectors of the army with police forces has begun."
And Rasoul went on to say that “internal security is one of the priorities of the Ministry of the Interior,” explaining that “the country is witnessing security and stability, and this came with great sacrifices made by the Iraqi people.”
"There is a real will on the part of the government to transfer the security file to the Internal Security Forces," said Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled al-Muhanna.
Al-Muhanna continued, "The situation required the presence of joint operations commands that invest all the capabilities of the security services to combat terrorism, as it is the first and main threat."
He pointed out, "The nature of the threats has changed at the present time. In addition to terrorism, there are threats of drugs, organized crime, illegal weapons, domestic violence and cybercrime."
Al-Muhanna stressed that "transferring the security file to the police comes as it has the greatest potential to face these challenges."
In addition, a member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Nayef Al-Shammari, said, "The security file must be completely handed over to the Ministry of Interior."
Al-Shammari added, "The duty of the army is to intervene in the security situation in the event of any serious threat for a specified period or in the event of natural disasters."
He pointed out that “internal security is one of the tasks of the Ministry of Interior and dealing with the citizen, and there are procedures for receiving the internal security file from the Ministry of Interior, which is a positive thing.”
Handing over the security file to the police forces and removing the army from the cities is one of the demands of the Sunni forces that were agreed upon when forming the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani.
