The official authorities are trying to address the problem of schools in Iraq, confirming the opening of dozens of buildings in order to absorb the momentum in the numbers of pupils and students, but the Parliamentary Education Committee confirms the need for 8 thousand school buildings to confront the phenomenon of double and triple shifts.
A government statement received by (Al-Mada) stated that “Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani opened the Black Gold Primary School for Girls in Basra Governorate.”
The statement added, "Al-Sudani also opened 64 school buildings throughout the province, during a ceremony that was held yesterday, Monday, in the office of the Basra Provincial Council, and was attended by the Minister of Education and the Governor."
He pointed out that “the 64 schools were distributed among the different regions of Basra, the share of the center was 18 schools, and the rest of the school buildings were distributed between the north of Basra by 25 schools, and the Zubair district west of Basra 12 schools, and the share of the Shatt al-Arab district in the east of the governorate was 6 schools, and the share of the district of Abi al-Khasib, south of Basra, 3 schools.
During the opening ceremony, Al-Sudani affirmed, "The government's keenness to give the educational file the utmost importance, especially with regard to speeding up the implementation of school buildings," explaining that "the opening of this number of schools today in the governorate, with high specifications, will contribute to ending the suffering of our dear students."
He pointed out that "next year will witness the completion of the implementation of other numbers of schools, which contributes to the development of the educational path and securing its most basic pillars represented by school buildings."
In addition, the spokesman for the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, Haider Majeed, said, “Based on the government’s direction towards supporting the infrastructure of the educational sector, and the direct attention given to this file by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani, the Department of National Projects and School Buildings continues in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers Its daily follow-up of the work stages and achievement rates achieved within the exemplary school buildings project, which includes the establishment of 1,000 schools distributed among the governorates, according to the standards set by the Supreme Committee.
He added that “the completion rates vary from one site to another, as many buildings have reached the stage of finishing the external structures, and the move towards internal finishes for a number of other sites in several governorates,” noting that “the department continues its unremitting efforts to file the project of the Ministry of Education No. 1 that is lagging.” And the number of completed buildings reached 150 schools, which entered service in the governorates’ directorates of education.
And he continued, “As part of the school building projects in the governorates, the number of buildings inaugurated by the Prime Minister during the past week has reached 107 schools in the governorates of Baghdad and Basra,” explaining that “these Muslim schools, which are under construction, will contribute greatly to bridging the shortage in schools.” School buildings and ending the bottlenecks in the current buildings.
For his part, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Karim Al-Sayed, stated in a statement, a copy of which Al-Mada received, that “in the presence of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Education, and the Governor of Basra, 65 schools entered service in the province, and 42 schools accepted them in Baghdad last week.”
Al-Sayed added, "Within 15 days, we have around 107 new schools, which will be added to the 556 schools that opened during this year only, to reduce our deficit, which is estimated at more than 8,000 thousand schools."
He pointed out that "the file of school buildings is still a top priority for us as a ministry," expressing his happiness at "reducing the difference in order to end school bottlenecks in some cities."
A statement by the ministry, received by (Al-Mada), stated that “The Minister of Education, Ibrahim Namis Al-Jubouri, visited the General Directorate of Education in Basra, and he was received by the Director General, Abd al-Hussein Salman; To find out the most important needs of the Directorate and to see the educational reality in the province.
Al-Jubouri held, according to the statement, a meeting that included the general director, assistants, and a number of directors of the departments and divisions of the directorate, and discussed with them several issues related to the educational reality, calling on the workers to “continue work and pay attention to the educational aspect and solve problems and obstacles in order to create an educational system that achieves the goals that the government aspires to.” .
And he pointed out, “Al-Jubouri listened to the opinions and proposals of the attendees and interacted with them, promising to find solutions to their problems and work to achieve their aspirations, and this falls within the priorities of the ministry’s work.”
The statement stated, "The Minister of Education praised the efforts of the Directorate through what he touched closely, especially since the Basra Governorate is devoid of mud schools."
And the statement went on, "Al-Jubouri inspected the workshop for repairing school trips in the leading prep school of Basra Industry, and appreciated their efforts in providing school seats for the people of the province in record time for a promising future for generations."
On the other hand, a member of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Jawad al-Ghazali, stated, “Parliament is following up on the file of demolished schools and the prefabricated schools project in 2011, and no school has been completed to this day.”
He pointed out that “the Ministry of Education blames the Ministries of Construction, Housing and Industry, but it is Education that bears responsibility for the failure of the project.”
Al-Ghazali pointed out that “the working hours in many schools are two or three, and that some of the schools reach the number of students per class to 80 students in the three primary, intermediate and preparatory stages.”
He stressed, "Iraq needs more than eight thousand schools to eliminate the phenomenon of double shifts in one school."
Al-Ghazali called on the Council of Ministers to “allocate funds in the draft budget law to rebuild schools destroyed during the era of previous governments and to advance the educational reality in the country.”
