Trade unions: Iraqis enter into a cycle of debt

Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amel
A workers' organization warned of the effects of the rise in the dollar exchange rate on the overall economic conditions of the working class and the sectors working in it, and while it indicated that the Iraqi individual began to enter into the cycle of borrowing to meet his life requirements and face the rise in prices.
And the Iraqi dinar continues to fluctuate against the dollar, as one dollar last week reached 1,600 dinars, which was reflected clearly and effectively on market prices in light of an economic recession that the Iraqi markets had not witnessed in 20 years.
The head of the Federation of Dhi Qar Workers Unions, Hisham Odeh Khudair al-Abadi, said in a statement to (Al-Mada), that "the dollar today is the one that controls the prices of the Iraqi market, and the high exchange rate against the Iraqi dinar confused prices and led to an obscene and unprecedented price of basic foodstuffs."
Al-Abadi added, "This rise greatly affected the workers, since their income is limited and their wages are fixed and low, and they cannot keep up with the high prices witnessed by the markets."
He pointed out, "The wages of workers in the private sector vary between 10,000 dinars (equivalent to approximately $6) and 25,000 dinars."
Al-Abadi stressed that “these wages do not cover the most basic requirements of life in light of prices that have doubled several times in recent times,” noting that “the purchasing power of workers is at its lowest level.”
He called, “the central government to reconsider the overall monetary and economic policy, support people with limited incomes, and work to restore the exchange rate of the dollar to its previous state.”
Al-Abadi pointed out, "The workers were suffering from high prices even during the previous price of the dollar, and the recent rise came to increase the size of their suffering."
And he finds, “The rise in market prices negatively affected the overall labor movement and raised unemployment rates among the working class, after many companies delayed their work and reduced the number of workers in them as a result of the high prices of materials,” noting that “unemployment rates are estimated at more than 40 percent among the labor force.” ".
Al-Abadi stated, "Most of the local companies' contracts are in Iraqi dinars, causing the drop in the price of the dinar against the dollar, causing great confusion in their work, which was reflected in the economic conditions of workers in the private sector."
And he continues, “The trade unions will not stand idly by in the face of the deteriorating economic conditions that are beginning to harm workers.”
And Al-Abadi went on to “wave to take to the streets and organize demanding activities, such as vigils and comprehensive labor demonstrations.”
The local markets in Dhi Qar and the rest of the Iraqi markets witnessed big jumps in the prices of basic materials, as the price of a bag of flour rose from 12 thousand dinars on the day when the price of the dollar was about 1200 dinars and became 40 thousand dinars after the price of the dollar exceeded 1550 dinars, while the price of a bag of rice became 65 thousand Dinars after it was at a price of 40 thousand dinars, while the price of a large package of milk increased from 22 thousand dinars to 38 thousand dinars, and the prices of legumes doubled, as the bag, which was at a price of 40 thousand dinars, became 90 thousand, while the price of a liter package of oil increased from Two thousand dinars to four thousand dinars.
