Report..
The election of a new Speaker of the House of Representatives comes at a time when the Iraqi arena is teeming with sensitive files and intertwined challenges that require shrewdness in dealing with and good management of pending files by all political forces
While passing controversial laws is one of the Council’s top priorities, there is an urgent need for broader consensus among the various parties, which requires the Coordination Framework and other forces to play a delicate role in bringing viewpoints closer together, especially on issues that affect social and political balance.
In the coming weeks, observers expect parliament to begin a new phase of intensive oversight work on state institutions that has been largely hampered by previous divisions.
There are interrogation requests that have been submitted for months and are pending consideration, and analyses indicated that this step may be a real test of the parliament’s ability to bear its oversight responsibility away from the disputes of the political blocs that have obstructed interrogations in the past.
Speaking about this file, Member of Parliament Ali Saadoun Al-Lami confirmed today, Saturday, that the next stage will witness the passing of controversial laws and the questioning of at least two ministers.
Al-Lami said in an interview, “Parliament will work to approve the three controversial laws proposed (personal status, general amnesty, and returning properties confiscated by the Baath regime’s decisions to their owners), as well as amending the elections law if there is such a desire among the political blocs, in addition to approving the budget schedules,” ruling out “passing other laws in the remaining period of the council’s term.”
He added, "The coming period will witness the organization of interrogations for at least two ministers, and there are parliamentary signatures that have been collected for this purpose."
In addition, member of the parliamentary legal committee, Aref Al-Hamami, says, “There are many important and suspended laws, exceeding 100 laws, parked in the corridors of the parliamentary committees, some of which have political differences, and others have technical problems and differences.”
He added, “Legislating any law in the House of Representatives requires the consensus and agreement of all political forces, especially important and stalled laws that have various political comments and objections, such as the general amnesty law, oil and gas, amending the Federal Court Law, and many other laws.”
Last Thursday, the House of Representatives voted by majority to appoint Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani as its speaker, while a heated debate is taking place between political forces over the approval of controversial laws. End 25 min
