Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani received a written message from the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which included an official invitation to visit the UAE, in order to discuss strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, and strengthening joint cooperation, in various fields and levels.
This came during Al-Sudani's reception, yesterday, Saturday, of the Minister of Justice of the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Abdullah Sultan bin Awad Al-Nuaimi.
The Prime Minister conveyed his thanks and appreciation to the Emirati envoy for the invitation, and promised to meet it as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the Prime Minister chaired a meeting that included the Association of Drug Producers in Iraq, in the presence of the Ministers of Health and Industry, a number of general managers in the two ministries, and a number of advisors. During the meeting, the reality of drug policy in Iraq was discussed, ways to develop the pharmaceutical industry and address the obstacles to its settlement in Iraq.
Al-Sudani said, "The government has placed the health file in the priorities of the ministerial curriculum, especially with regard to the pharmaceutical aspect, which needs more reorganization in the field of random drug imports, to achieve integrated drug security."
He referred to "the pharmaceutical industry, which is one of the engines of the economy, and contributes to providing job opportunities, and the need to localize and develop it in light of a serious government approach to economic reform," stressing that "the pharmaceutical market in Iraq spends about three billion dollars annually to import medicines, most of which are not subject to examination, While Iraq produces only 10 percent of it.
The Prime Minister pointed to "the ability of the private sector to contribute to the pharmaceutical industry, with the participation of international companies," noting that "the Samarra Pharmaceutical Factory is a bright name in the pharmaceutical industry."
He explained, "The ability of the private sector to produce more than 250 additional types of medicine in cooperation with international companies within a period ranging from six months to a year, and the government will provide facilities to import raw materials, with setting a time limit for developing factories and raising their production capabilities according to approved specifications."
For his part, the Minister of Health, Saleh Al-Hasnawi, confirmed to "INA" that "the aim of the meeting is to localize the pharmaceutical industry in the country, as all possible ways to localize it and achieve drug security were discussed." He added, "The meeting witnessed agreement on a number of points related to inputs, developing factories, facilitating procedures for establishing these factories, and supporting their products, starting with import, customs matters, taxes, and contracts with the Ministry of Health."
He pointed out that "the ministry is committed to implementing the government program of the prime minister, by supporting the national industry and the pharmaceutical industry and localizing the local product," stressing that "the outputs of the meeting are in the interest of the citizen and the development of the private and government sectors represented by the Samarra and Nineveh drug manufacturers and treatment of the shortage of medicines."
And he continued, "It is hoped that an upcoming meeting will be held in the presence of the ministries of finance, health, and industry, because there are issues related to customs and fees that should be discussed and will be discussed in the presence of the Prime Minister's Office, as well as the Association of Drug Producers."
