{Local: Al Furat News} The Electricity and Energy Committee in the House of Representatives acknowledged that the electricity sector is "almost collapsed" in the country.
Committee member Hussein Nima al-Battat said, in a press statement, that "the electricity sector suffers from production, transportation and distribution problems," noting that "there is a preliminary agreement between the ministry, the committee and the prime minister that there be a specificity for this sector within the 2023 budget, as it represents a major challenge, especially in next summer".
He added, "No one can predict a date for solving the electricity problem, as it is a semi-collapsed sector and needs a lot of money and years to advance it," noting that "the important thing in this sector are the productive steam stations, which require a contract period of 36 months if available." security and economic stability.
Al-Battat continued, "The gas production plants have a contract period of 18 months, but if we want to rely on large production plants or those that add 2 to 3 thousand megawatts, then this needs 36 months."
And he noted that "there must be an integrated plan with the construction of production stations, and there must be construction of 400, 132 and 133 KV conversion stations, with the readiness of networks within cities," explaining, "The existence of challenges facing this sector, most notably the slums that are constantly growing and exceeding energy consumption." electricity, as well as the wasteful use of electrical energy by citizens.
A member of the Parliamentary Electricity and Energy Committee stressed, "The country needs smart meters to control the amount of electricity supplied to homes, which leads to rationalization of energy use," noting that "current production is sufficient for all people if used properly."
He added, "The ministry has ongoing projects and there are others underway that can alleviate the suffering of citizens when the electricity sector deteriorates, especially in the summer, as Iraq's need for electricity amounts to more than 30,000 megawatts, and there are contracts for investment stations within the ministry's operational plan." He pointed out that Dhi Qar Governorate is working on establishing a private station to produce 3,000 megawatts, which would solve many problems in it and in other governorates.
