Yesterday, Sunday, the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, announced that the releases of the Tigris River will improve in the coming days, while indicating that an invitation was extended to the Iranian Minister of Energy to attend the third Baghdad Water Conference.
This comes at a time when observers indicated that Iraq is facing a harsh summer, pointing to a significant decrease in the level of water storage.
The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, said, in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (Al-Mada), that "meetings and work are continuing with the Iranian and Turkish sides regarding Iraq's water share."
Diab added, "An invitation was extended to the Iranian Minister of Energy to attend and participate in the third Baghdad Water Conference, which will be held next month."
He pointed out, "Discussions and understandings with the Turkish side during the prime minister's recent visit included an agreement to send a technical delegation to Turkey soon."
Diab pointed out, "The delegation was identified and addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding them, and it is hoped that the visit will take place after Eid Al-Fitr."
Dhiab stated, "Iraq invited the Turkish delegation to visit it for the purpose of continuing discussions on activating the memorandum of understanding that was previously signed between the two countries in this field, which entered into force and was ratified by the Turkish and Iraqi parliaments."
Diab went on to say that "there are practical steps to implement what was stated in the terms of the memorandum," noting that "the releases of the Tigris River will improve, especially with the commitment of the Turkish side to the agreed releases."
For his part, the ministry’s spokesman, Khaled Shamal, stated, “The visit that Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani made to Turkey made the water file sovereign, and it was agreed to double the water releases towards the Tigris River, and this matter has been initiated since the twenty-third day of last month.” ".
And Shamal continued, "The torrents that came from eastern Iraq across the border with the Iranian side were useful, part of which pushed directly to the Tigris River, and the other to revive the marshes adjacent to the border between the two countries." For his part, Adel Al-Mukhtar, a specialist in water affairs, stated that “Iraq suffers year after year from a decline in storage, until today it is at its lowest level.”
Al-Mukhtar continued, "The water situation is still critical, because we are on the verge of a drinking water crisis, with indications that we will enter a harsh summer."
He pointed out that "all the rains that fall on Iraq are used, whether in the winter or summer season."
Al-Mukhtar said, “The rains that fell in the first three months of this year were estimated by the ministry at one billion cubic meters, a quarter of which is from Samarra towards the north of the country, and it can be stored, which is 250 million cubic meters in a storage space of 90 billion cubic meters.”
And he stressed, "The rain that fell from southern Samarra to Basra Governorate is not stored, but is used in winter cultivation, irrigation of crops, supporting the marshes and pushing the salty tongue."
Al-Mukhtar stated, “The Turkish side has doubled the water towards Iraq, which is about 500 meters per second, and thus the total revenues will reach two billion cubic meters, and it has been used to provide weaning irrigation, which the Ministry of Water Resources has estimated at two billion and 500 million cubic meters, and thus the winter agricultural season has ended.” ".
It is estimated that "the water storage has been added to it at the range of one billion to one billion and 500 million cubic meters, which is weak and therefore we will be facing a very harsh summer."
Al-Mukhtar concluded that “the agricultural sector drains about 85% of the water, which requires a review of the agricultural policy.”
Iraq has been suffering for three years from scarce water seasons, which greatly affected agricultural plans and contributed to their decline, after a great scarcity of rain, in addition to the water policies of neighboring countries that refused to share the damage.
