Today, Friday, the Ministry of Water Resources announced that the water storage increased by 30% compared to the beginning of the winter season, while clarifying the priorities of the summer agricultural plan.
"The water storage has increased by 30% compared to the beginning of the winter season, and drinking water and other uses are secured," ministry spokesman Khaled Shamal told the official agency.
He added, "As for the summer agricultural plan, it will include preserving fruitful orchards and some types of important crops," noting that "if the releases and water revenues from Turkey are good while preserving them, it will be allowed to have a small and medium summer agricultural plan."
And Shamal added, "Supporting the water file requires concerted efforts from everyone," noting, "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani transferred this file from a technical and diplomatic file to a sovereign file, and he made a historic visit that counts for him to Turkey and was accompanied by a number of ministers, including a minister Water resources Aoun Dhiab, who is considered one of the most important irrigation experts in Iraq and the Arab world, and they conveyed a clear picture of the Iraqi water reality to the Turkish leadership, which in turn doubled the water releases despite the coincidence of the rainy season, but the releases were doubled in the Tigris River and the agreement was for a month.
He stressed, "The Ministry of Water Resources needs sums of money estimated at 1,500 billion dinars annually to implement important projects such as water harvesting dam projects, major reform projects, maintenance of current projects, and the shift from open irrigation to closed irrigation," noting that "the ministry did not obtain the necessary and sufficient allocations." Compared to other ministries such as the ministries of oil and electricity.
Shamal pointed out that "Iraq currently receives only 30% of the natural water revenues it needs," calling for "the necessity of reforming the agricultural sector and reforming the agricultural identity because agriculture drains more than 70% of Iraqi water revenues."
And he stated, "The ministry has taken serious steps this season in the field of managing abuses, controlling water distributions, adopting a system of drinking and water consumption, and thus preserving strategic storage this season."
