    Baghdad today - Erbil 
    Kurdish politician Mahmoud Othman said today, Sunday (September 17, 2023), that the unity of the Kurdish forces, especially of the two Kurdish parties, has strengthened their position in Baghdad.
    The crisis between Erbil and Baghdad was renewed, after a calm that lasted only 10 months after the formation of the new government headed by Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, which the Kurdish parties granted their confidence according to a list of conditions approved by the coordination framework, in addition to similar conditions imposed by the Sunni Arab parties as well.
    Othman said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the unity of the Kurdish parties and their going with a joint delegation strengthened their position and presence with the political forces and blocs in the capital, Baghdad.”
    He added, "In the previous stage, the position of the Kurds was weak because of the dispute that existed between them, and this weakened their weight and political weight in the negotiations with the federal government."
    Since the beginning of this September, the intensity of the tense statements and responses between Baghdad and Erbil has escalated, to the point where local Kurdish media outlets close to the regional government adopted the phrase “occupied Kirkuk” in their comment on the events that the city witnessed, which left 4 dead and about 15 wounded on Saturday, September 2nd. 
    The deaths occurred as a result of protests organized by supporters of Arab and Turkmen parties, rejecting the return of the Kurdistan Democratic Party to its old headquarters in Kirkuk, from which it withdrew in 2017 following the Iraqi army’s control of the city following a military campaign in Baghdad in response to Erbil organizing a referendum to secede from Iraq.
