Complaints were submitted against five articles of the Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections Law, related to the number of parliamentary seats, one district, multiple districts, and the final number of seats in the Kurdistan Parliament. The complaints were registered by Ziad Jabbar, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc in the fifth session of the Kurdistan Parliament, and Aman Najib Shamoun, a member. Christian in Sulaymaniyah Governorate Council.
The Regional Minister for Component Affairs in the Kurdistan Government, Aydin Marouf, a member of the Political Bureau of the Iraqi Turkmen Front, and representatives of a number of Turkmen political parties in Iraq and Kurdistan, held a press conference today about the participation of the Turkmen component in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Kurdistan.
Aydin Marouf said about the participation of the Turkmen component in the upcoming elections for the Kurdistan Parliament, “It has been requested that the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament elections be held in accordance with the Election Law of 1992, and if the elections are held according to this law, the Turkmen component will not have any seat in Parliament, because in this law the seats of the components are divided.” Between the Chaldean, Syriac and Assyrian components.”
Aydin Marouf added, “There are other parties that have asked the Federal Court to hold the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections under the same Iraqi parliamentary elections law of 2018, and if the elections are held in accordance with this law, the Turkmen component will be deprived of their electoral rights as well, and therefore, with both laws, the Turkmen component will be deprived of their rights.” In the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections.”
According to the Regional Minister for Component Affairs in the Kurdistan Government, “There are parties who want to mix this issue with political conflicts and use it for their own political purposes. We ask the Federal Court to take into account the situation of the components and reject this complaint. This is basically a matter that concerns the Parliament of Kurdistan, and the Parliament of Kurdistan can make changes to Election law, and we believe that any decision taken against the components will affect the existing peaceful coexistence in Kurdistan, and we are proud of that.”
Aydin Marouf stressed that “the components in Kurdistan are neutral and do not support any party in political conflicts at the expense of another party, and that the participation of the sects in the upcoming parliamentary elections is very important and they must be supported.”
He explained, “Peaceful coexistence between the components and sects in Kurdistan is a very important and sensitive issue, and we must all work together to maintain this peaceful coexistence, and we, the components, especially the Turkmen component, always support political and economic stability in Kurdistan.”
