{Local: Al-Furat News} Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Muhammad Ali Tamim, stressed today, Sunday, the importance of cooperation with European Union countries to support the Iraqi government’s efforts to confront climate change.
Tamim said, in his speech during the (Iraq and Climate Change Initiative) conference held by the European Union mission in Iraq, that “Iraq’s position is firm and principled regarding the Palestinian issue, rejecting what the Zionist entity is doing against the heroic Gaza, and we affirm our solidarity and full support for its people in defending their rights.” ", calling on the international community to "take a clear stance in rejecting and condemning Israel's crimes."
He added, "Iraq is among the five countries in the world most affected by the climate changes that our planet is witnessing," noting that "we have continued to formulate policies and take decisions that will confront climate changes, and build real partnerships between various sectors to ensure the achievement of Sustaining economic growth, ensuring food and water security, and shifting towards clean and renewable energy uses.”
He continued, "Iraq is witnessing steady population growth that has led to a significant expansion of cities, with the percentage of urban residents reaching 70 percent compared to 30 percent of the rural population," noting "developing plans regarding land use, setting energy efficiency standards, and building sustainable cities." .
He pointed out that "the new residential cities announced by Iraq take into account all the requirements for protecting the environment and confronting climate change," noting that "in the field of reducing carbon emissions, we have prepared a plan to launch a package of projects financed by carbon bonds, which aim to reduce carbon emissions and enhance Iraq's balance of carbon bonds through optimal investment of associated gas and reducing the rate of its combustion in all oil fields.
He stressed that "Iraq is on the cusp of a new phase, after its security, economic, political, and services recovery, and today we are facing an important development opportunity, which depends on economic reform and achieving development, in accordance with the priorities of the government program," expressing "a sincere desire for more cooperation with European Union countries."
