The Presidency of the Republic called for the need for the Election Commission to adopt a strategy to enhance communication with the media, while the head of the Iraqi Media Network, Dr. Nabil Jassim, identified the most important tasks of the media in enhancing participation in the electoral process. The head of the presidential body of advisors, Ali Al-Shukri, said in his speech delivered on behalf of On the authority of the President of the Republic during the conference “The Role of the Media in Promoting Participation in Elections,” attended by “Al-Sabah”: “The conference is an important opportunity that requires us to take a serious stance to achieve the electoral entitlement, ensure effective political participation, and form elected local governments capable of carrying out the tasks assigned to them in the governorates.” He added. Al-Shukri said, “The exceptional importance of the elections is to fulfill a constitutional demand that has been absent for nearly 10 years, in light of the political and security stability that the country is witnessing, to affirm the constitutional rights of citizens in the voting process, and for the people alone to be the source of authority and legitimacy in our nascent democracy.” The head of the Presidency’s Board of Advisors continued. “The President of the Republic calls for making every effort to hold fair and transparent elections, with broad participation that reflects the will of voters, in a way that guarantees basic freedoms, which is the most important foundation for the success of this entitlement.”
He explained, “The importance of the media comes in stimulating voter participation, as the media’s role cannot be lacking in the overall electoral process and establishing a culture of acceptance of the results. The Commission must work to build a distinguished relationship based on advancing the national interest with the media, and providing all means to convey information to them.” And adopting a media strategy to enhance communication with them.”
For his part, the head of the Iraqi Media Network, Dr. Nabil Jassim, said: “The media plays a decisive role in the electoral process, and it allows the leader to direct his speech to tens of thousands or millions of citizens,” adding that “the media is the basic and main link between The public and the political or ruling class, because the transmission of information, ideas and approaches adopted by the political class is a process undertaken by the media.”
Jassim pointed out during his speech at the conference that “the mission of the Iraqi Media Network and the private media is to educate people about the importance of participating in elections, and the individual’s right to exercise his political role,” pointing out that “the most sacred mission of the media is to provide a platform for discussion, as it is the right of the general public to Forming an integrated, balanced and objective point of view and presenting all opinions so that they can form the best possible point of view.”
The head of the network continued, “Among other tasks is oversight and accountability, especially on election days, to help regulatory authorities monitor violations and play an important role in reducing them,” adding that comprehensive coverage of elections is “part of national security in cooperation with the Commission, and it is a fundamental and vital detail in the network’s work.” .
