The electoral process is witnessing media propaganda carried out by political parties or independent candidates to obtain the largest possible number of votes that would qualify them to reach the governorate councils, amid questions about the expected participation rate.
Political parties spent huge sums of money on propaganda that filled the streets, satellite channels, and social media, while negative reactions occurred that ended with some pictures of the candidates being removed from the streets or being torn down, which is considered a legal violation that requires prosecution.
Writer and journalist Muhammad Wadah described the electoral propaganda as “irresponsible,” criticizing the phenomenon of using the state’s capabilities in the electoral race.
Waddah told “Al-Sabah”: “Electoral propaganda is mostly irresponsible, and it appeals to people on the basis of immediate and material interests and not an important strategy that will benefit people in the future through the governorate councils.” He added, “The state’s capabilities and sponsorship salaries are being invested and the voter is being wooed with in-kind and material resources and an attempt.” Buying the debts of some people,” warning that “the candidate or political blocs are only effective during the election season while they disappear during the rest of the year. This issue is irresponsible and reveals a weakness in the political vision.”
He continued: “A vision, a platform, and goals that the candidate is working on for the elections must be presented, which support his vision and the vision of his party and complement the state’s projects.” He criticized the phenomenon of “tempting the voter or buying his name,” describing it as “flaw and weakness, and it is a culture that has existed since 2003 around the tools that the candidate uses.” .
He pointed out that "some blocs are trying to use slogans linked to state institutions to win over voters, and this in itself is a violation of the law because it exploits state institutions," and explained that "the Electoral Commission's oversight does not rise to the level of responsibility in light of the presence of violations."
In turn, writer and journalist Salam Al-Zubaidi confirms that many candidates seek the position for the sake of power or prestige, criticizing the propaganda methods carried out by some candidates.
Al-Zubaidi told Al-Sabah: “Electoral propaganda over the previous electoral cycles - whether local or parliamentary - did not rise to the level of the voter’s ambition, who desires mature electoral programs capable of creating a new situation at the level of his representation in the provincial councils or parliament.” He added, "The candidate is still seeking to reach the position for the sake of prestige and power or to obtain a job, so you will find that most people do not have the slightest idea about their role in the stage after their victory in the elections."
He stressed that "this became clear when following some of the electoral propaganda proposals of the candidates, who give what they cannot afford to the voter, and others tempt the voter with money, mobile phone cards, and lunches," and he pointed out "the lack of a method of persuasion with a realistic proposal, and with the electoral project that tempts the voter to choose it." ".
Al-Zubaidi pointed out that “some electoral propaganda used huge sums of money, and this created a state of imbalance between the independent candidate who is not supported by a wealthy bloc and party, and others who have money to waste on posters, seminars and major festivals held in this regard,” and he expected that “those The practices will disappear if the citizen’s awareness increases in choosing who represents him, and this responsibility falls on the media institutions and organizations concerned with this aspect.”
