    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (January 27, 2024), a parliamentary source revealed two main reasons hindering the holding of the session to select the Speaker of Parliament today.
The source said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "There is difficulty in holding a session of the House of Representatives, without raising the first paragraph regarding the election of the Speaker of the House."
The source added, "The first reason is related to the lack of political agreement on one candidate, while the second is represented by the presence of a political desire to postpone this paragraph until the Federal Supreme Court decides on the lawsuits filed before it regarding the previous election session and the events and accusations that accompanied it."
The Presidency of the House of Representatives decided to postpone the parliamentary session, scheduled for today, Saturday, by half an hour due to lack of a quorum.
The session's agenda includes several paragraphs, the most prominent of which is the first paragraph, which includes voting on the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Next Monday, the Federal Court set a date for deciding “four lawsuits for the previous session to elect the Speaker of Parliament.”
According to documents that “Baghdad Today” obtained, on Friday (January 26, 2024), a copy of, “The Federal Court will consider, next Monday, 4 cases and requests, the first of which is canceling the first round session and all the outcomes that emerged from it, including the nomination and the names that were nominated.” It was voted on, in addition to a request to issue a state order to stop the resumption of the second round of voting on candidates for the position of Speaker of Parliament. The requests also included invalidating the nomination of Representative Shalan Al-Karim, as well as dropping his membership from Parliament.
