    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Monday (February 12, 2024), Member of Parliament Ali Al-Lami considered that the launch of the development road project will not take place during the current year, but rather next year, in contrast to the government announcement last year, which confirmed work to start the project in 2024.
Al-Lami said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The development road is a strategic project that will significantly change the direction of maritime transportation routes, especially trade corridors from the regions of South and Southeast Asia towards Europe and vice versa."
He pointed out that "the project has 8 influential economic, security, social and investment dimensions."
He added, "The first phase may start at the beginning of 2025, not 2024, because there are many paragraphs and maps that need to be integrated, waiting for the green light to proceed with them, including the road's route lines."
He pointed out that "many countries have expressed their desire to have a role in investments on the development path, given that it is the least expensive in transportation, safe and highly flexible in delivering goods from Al-Faw port all the way to the Turkish border and from there to Europe directly via railways and land roads."
The Iraqi government announced last year that the start of the development road project would begin at the beginning of the year 2024 and end in the year 2028 with a record completion period, and the financial cost of the project amounts to 17 billion dollars, including 10.5 billion dollars allocated to the construction of an entirely new railway from Al-Faw to Fishkhabour, and $6.5 billion will be allocated to the land route.
Yesterday, Sunday, a Turkish delegation visited Al-Faw Port in Basra to see the work of completing the entire port, which is the starting point for embarking on the development path that Turkey is “enthusiastic about” as a corridor to Europe from the Gulf and Iraq.
