The Ministry of Water Resources intends to reactivate the project to construct the Butma Dam in Kirkuk Governorate, with a capacity of 500 million cubic metres, which aims to collect rainwater and floods to benefit from it for drinking and irrigation purposes.
The Assistant Director of Water Resources in Kirkuk, Haval Muhammad Hamid, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiyab Abdullah, during his visit to Kirkuk Governorate, and based on the demands of the notables and people related to the subject, instructed the Center for Studies and Designs to reactivate the previously submitted study regarding the construction of the Batma Dam. In the valley of the same name and within the area separating the Hawija District and the Lower Zab River.
He explained that the dam will store rainwater in an amount of up to 500 million cubic meters, given that Wadi Batma and its neighboring valleys receive large amounts of torrents annually, especially during years of heavy rain, noting that there was a study previously conducted and work on it was stopped, to establish the dam with the aim of benefiting from it in the summer. In irrigating agricultural lands, in addition to stimulating tourism in the place, in addition to enhancing the strategic storage of groundwater in the region, in addition to feeding liquefaction water projects.
Hamid stated that the recent heavy rains contributed to raising the water level of the private dam, whose storage currently stands at 50 million cubic metres, which is built on the river of the same name in the governorate, by approximately one square metre, pointing to the importance of the dam built in 2011 with a storage capacity of up to 100 million cubic metres. cubic metres, to feed water collections for nearby neighborhoods, as well as tourism, fishing and irrigation of agricultural lands, noting that the dam depends for its water on rain from nearby valleys.
