Agriculture expects lower meat prices

The Ministry of Agriculture stated that its intensive measures to reduce meat prices, the most important of which was the import of 65,000 heads of livestock, contributed to controlling prices, coinciding with the approaching holy month, expecting the price of one kilogram in the coming days to reach between 12 and 15 thousand dinars.
The Director General of the Department of Animal Wealth in the Ministry, Dr. Walid Muhammad Razouqi, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: Over the past weeks, the local markets have witnessed an increase in the prices of red meat, as the price of one kilogram of lamb reached 23 thousand dinars and that of beef reached 20 thousand dinars.
He added that livestock breeders attribute the rise in meat prices to the rise in feed prices, usually an unjustified reason, since meat prices exceed the cost, even when the price of a ton of feed reached 800 thousand dinars. Selling it at a price of ten thousand dinars per kilogram would provide them with a good profit margin.
Razouki attributed the rise in meat prices to the monopoly of some livestock breeders as a result of successive occasions such as the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, in addition to the visit of Ashura, and the keeping of large numbers of livestock and cows, in addition to the livestock breeders’ trend towards green plants in wild pastures as a result of the launch of the fattening and mating season and the calving period. Sheep and livestock slaughter decrease, which reduces their availability in light of increasing demand.
Regarding the measures taken by his ministry to stop the rise in meat prices, he explained that the first and most important of these measures was to allow the import of 65,000 live calf heads, of which 19,000 arrived in the country, 19,000 of which were coming from Brazil for the purposes of slaughter and distinguished by the quality of their meat, and were distributed among four governorates, with six thousand heads within a station. Sheltering Al-Zubair in Basra Governorate, and four thousand to Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Governorate, in addition to nine thousand distributed between Baghdad and Maysan Governorate, thus including all the remaining governorates, while another six thousand heads of calves will arrive very soon in the country, with the expectation that the price of one kilogram of meat will reach within days. In the future, it will range between 12 and 15 thousand dinars, depending on the ages of the animals.
In the same context, he stated that the Council of Ministers for the Economy had agreed to reduce customs duties for the import of sheep meat and live calves for slaughtering and breeding purposes, by 50 percent, while facilitating import procedures, encouraging investment in livestock, and facilitating the transportation of livestock between governorates, revealing a trend to diversify. Importing countries such as the Netherlands, Brazil, Kenya, Sudan and Somalia.
The Director General of the Animal Wealth Department continued that a delegation was sent from the Veterinary Department in the Ministry, to inspect the livestock and demand a health certificate, that they are free of diseases, their quality and conformity to specifications, before allowing them to enter the country by housing them in veterinary quarantines for a period of 30 days.
