Agriculture: 3 reasons and 4 solutions to the problem of meat prices, but the rise continues until the end of March

The Ministry of Agriculture expected that red meat prices would return to normal levels at the end of next March, and the Ministry attributed the significant increase in prices to several reasons, including “Iraqis’ taste” and their preference for Iraqi meat despite the presence of imported meat at reasonable prices, in addition to the movement of livestock herds to the desert to graze, exploiting cover. The plant appeared after the last wave of rain, and the death of thousands of buffalo heads in the marshes as a result of drought.
Clarification of the reasons for the high prices of red meat in local markets and the treatments carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture:
• The significantly increased local demand for local red meat in particular, due to the Iraqi citizen’s taste moving away from imported meat, which is available in the markets at moderate prices ranging between nine thousand dinars for sheep meat and six thousand dinars for beef meat.
• All livestock breeders moved towards the desert areas due to the presence of water and green fodder in these areas due to the good rains that fell during the current winter days, which provided them with a suitable environment for raising and fattening their livestock.
• Thousands of buffalo heads died in the marsh areas as a result of the drying up of large areas last summer.
Ministry of Agriculture processors:
• Suspending import licenses and facilitating procedures for importing red meat from various reliable origins, taking into account health controls and conditions.
• Allowing the import of live cows and sheep for breeding and slaughter purposes. This happens for the first time to address the market need for red meat.
• Supporting investment in the field of livestock and providing soft loans to breeders and workers in this field.
• Facilitating the movement of livestock between different governorates.
It is expected that red meat prices will witness a gradual decline at the end of the third month as breeders begin to return to their original areas and move towards selling their livestock after the end of the fattening period. The effects mentioned regarding the import of live animals for the purposes of breeding and slaughter will also be achieved, which will revive the markets and achieve an abundance of various meats. At prices suitable for different segments of citizens.
