The Ministry of Oil revealed a plan to increase the production of petroleum derivatives, while setting a date for closing the gasoline import file.
Director General of the Petroleum Products Distribution Company, Hussein Talib, said, “Self-sufficiency in petroleum derivatives and ending their import depends on the completion of projects related to national refineries,” indicating that “the Ministry of Oil has developed a plan within a time limit to end the import process and complete refinery procedures.”
He pointed out that, “After operating the Karbala refinery, the import of petroleum derivatives for the gasoline product was reduced by up to 7 million liters after Iraq had been importing 14 million liters, in addition to ending the import file for gas oil and white oil products after production in the national oil refineries reached self-sufficiency.”
Taleb added, “The remainder of the import is only the gasoline product, but after operating the North Refinery with a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day, the import of gasoline will be reduced by approximately three million liters of high-octane gasoline, which he was importing in order to mix it with local gasoline to obtain a good quality of the gasoline produced.” Locally,” he pointed out, “increasing the production capacity in this refinery will compensate for three million liters instead of the imported one.”
He continued, “The remainder for import in 2024 is approximately four million liters, and the ministry is serious about ending the file of importing petroleum derivatives during the beginning of 2025,” explaining that “importing petroleum derivatives has drained the state’s finances, which costs the state 4 billion and 500 million dollars annually in normal circumstances.”
