Shafaq News/ Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein revealed that a meeting will soon be held in Baghdad, including Syrian and Turkish officials, to discuss the Syrian crisis. He also commented on reports that Hamas leaders are planning to leave Qatar for Iraq.
Hussein's statements came in an interview conducted by the "Bal Iraqi" program broadcast by the American "Al-Hurra" channel, on the sidelines of his visit to Washington to participate in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) meetings.
Hussein said, "There is an initiative from Iraq to mediate between Ankara and Damascus, and communication is ongoing in this regard," stressing that he met on Wednesday with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Washington in order to arrange a meeting in Baghdad with the Syrian side.
Hussein added that there is also continuous communication from Iraq with the Syrian side, and we will set a date to hold this meeting in Baghdad.
The Iraqi Foreign Minister also pointed out that "the decision to mediate is Iraqi" and that Iraq "does not take the light of our internal or external policies from others, but we discuss with friends and allies the steps we are taking, especially those related to the security and stability of the region."
Hussein pointed out that the success of the mediation "will have a positive impact on Iraq if the two sides reach important results and solve the problems through peaceful means and negotiations, not through military solutions."
    Turkish invasion
Regarding the recent Turkish military movements in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Hussein denied the existence of any "green light from the Iraqi side to the Turks," indicating that "the Turkish army has been present inside Iraqi territory since 1991 in some areas of Dohuk Governorate."
Hussein stressed that the issue of the presence of the Turkish army will be a point to be discussed during meetings to be held with Turkish officials soon.
He also said, "During our discussions with the Turkish side, we have not yet reached an agreement on the security file."
He pointed out that the Turks "link the presence of their forces inside Iraqi territory to the presence of the Kurdistan Workers' Party."
The Iraqi minister said, "The PKK problem is a Turkish problem and now it has become an Iraqi problem as well, and therefore it must be dealt with in the Iraqi way."
Hussein added: "We do not believe in solving problems through violence. With the Iranian side, we reached a set of agreements regarding the armed opposition parties present in the region, and the same model can be used with Turkey and the PKK."
Hussein said that "some members of these Iranian opposition parties were transferred to refugee camps and others traveled outside Iraq."
Hussein commented on reports that Hamas leaders were planning to leave Qatar for Iraq, as pressure from Doha and the United States mounted on the movement to show greater flexibility in talks to stop the ceasefire in Gaza.
Hussein said, "There is no official decision to move Hamas to Iraq. I have not seen such a decision."
    Foreign presence
Regarding his visit to the United States, Hussein said that it came at the invitation of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to participate in the NATO summit held in Washington.
He added that the visit will witness meetings with a number of American and NATO officials.
He also noted that he will hold meetings with officials in the Treasury Department to discuss US-Iraqi relations in the economic field and the problems existing between the Central Bank of Iraq and the Ministry of Finance with the Treasury Department.
The Iraqi minister said that cooperation between Iraq and NATO exists and has recently increased to include the Ministry of Interior, where the alliance is working to train the Federal Police forces.
