Canceling the July 14 holiday sparks widespread controversy

The decision of the Council of Representatives to cancel the July 14 holiday, which is the anniversary of the declaration of the Iraqi Republic and the end of the monarchy, has caused great surprise and widespread controversy in the Iraqi street, while the Council of Representatives clarified that the legal text received from the government did not include this holiday, in addition to the fact that this day is considered a "bloody day" in the memory of Iraqis, according to the expression of members of the Council. The
statements of members of the Council of Representatives in this regard came with a lack of encouragement for such a holiday that has negative memories for Iraqis.
Member of the Legal Committee, Muhammad Jassim Al-Khafaji, explained to "Al-Sabah" that "the July 14 holiday was not canceled, because the government text that was submitted to the parliament did not include it," adding that "the Council of Representatives has the authority to amend and add holidays as it deems appropriate, but this issue is still a subject of great controversy."
He pointed out that "July 14 is the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the republic, but it is not a popular revolution, but rather resembles a military coup, and it witnessed killings, which makes it (a bloody day) in the memory of some," according to his expression.
Al-Khafaji also stressed that "April 9 cannot be considered a holiday, because it is the day foreign forces intervened to overthrow the former regime, despite the people's rejection of it," explaining that "adding two holidays by the President of the Republic is inaccurate, because the law was enacted in Parliament without these holidays, and any amendment must be sent to Parliament for a vote."
He stressed that "Parliament did not receive anything from the Presidency of the Republic regarding adding two holidays, which are July 14 and December 3," noting that "December 3, which is the day Iraq joined the League of Nations, does not hold any value in the memory of Iraqis and is not considered an important event."
For his part, in an interview with "Al-Sabah," MP Dhiaa Al-Hindi described July 14 as a "bloody anniversary" of the overthrow of the monarchy, and that "it is necessary to move away from the era of coups and celebrate the current democracy."
He stressed that "Parliament's vision is not to add this holiday, because this day is associated with coups and the majority of Iraqis are sensitive about it due to the killing of the royal family on it," according to him.
