    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Security and political expert Mujasha' Al-Tamimi commented on Wednesday (July 31, 2024) on the impact of the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on the situation in Iraq.
Al-Tamimi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Israelis want to assassinate Ismail Haniyeh in the heart of the Iranian capital, Tehran, to send a message to Tehran in the first place that they are able to reach any place Israel wants, and it is a message to Iran in the first place before it is directed to Hamas and the axis of resistance."
He explained that "things have become complicated and the signs of a comprehensive war in the region are close because Israel has violated all the rules of engagement and has gone too far in trying to insult Iran. Consequently, Iran is in an embarrassing situation because its allies in the region have been subjected to strong blows, especially Hamas, which has lost 60% of its defensive and offensive capabilities. The Houthis have also been subjected to Israeli and Western attacks that have greatly affected them, and this situation applies to Hezbollah, Syria, and the resistance factions in Iraq."
Al-Tamimi added, "The Iranian response is inevitable, but there will be measures before taking the decision to respond, because silence on these violations means Israel's persistence in targeting the axis of resistance, and thus direct targeting of Iran, which is suffering from difficult circumstances. It was not willing to escalate and tried by all means to limit the war to the Gaza Strip, but Israel exploited the situation to strike Iran and weaken it. It is certain that Iraq will be greatly affected by all these developments, especially on the security and military level, as Iraq is not far from all these events and developments, which will have political repercussions on the Iraqi interior."
Hamas announced today, Wednesday (July 31, 2024), the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the movement's political bureau abroad, stressing that Haniyeh's assassination is a dangerous escalation.
Iranian media quoted the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as confirming the news of the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said: "We are studying the dimensions of the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, and we will announce the results of the investigation later."
Hamas said in a statement that it "mourns Ismail Haniyeh, the movement's leader, who was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran, after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president."
Haniyeh's last appearance in Tehran was during the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, inside the Iranian parliament. Hamas Political Bureau member Musa Abu Marzouk confirmed that Haniyeh's assassination was a cowardly act that would not go unpunished.
Haniyeh arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to attend the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, in the Shura Council. Haniyeh met with Pezeshkian and the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday amid fears of a war between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah.
