Shafaq News/ Omed Khoshnaw, head of the local government in Erbil Governorate, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, stated on Wednesday that more than 25% of the water wells in the governorate have dried up.
Khoshnaw told a number of media outlets, including Shafaq News Agency, during his inspection of the third secretion water project, that "during the past year alone, more than 100 wells were drilled to solve the problem of water scarcity within the borders of Erbil Governorate.
He added that during this year, more than 25 percent of these wells dried up, stressing the need to make greater use of surface water instead of groundwater. In this context, it was decided to implement the fourth Ifraz water project.
It is noteworthy that 40 percent of the residential areas and neighborhoods in Erbil city have been suffering from water scarcity since last Monday due to a break in the water pipeline in the third separation project in addition to the rehabilitation of the project for which the Kurdistan Regional Government allocated 20 billion dinars last year.
In this regard, the governor said in a special statement to Shafaq News Agency that the third separation project has been underway for more than 48 hours, and will return to service this evening, Wednesday, as the water level in residential neighborhoods will increase.
It is noteworthy that Erbil Governorate depends 35% on spring water and running rivers, and 65% on groundwater.
