The Baghdad crisis comes last in a time when the United States emphasizes its war against the Islamic State. The mounting political crisis raises questions about how the American influence on the Iraqi Government, a strong ally in the war on the Islamic State.
Saluting protesters stormed the Parliament building in Baghdad Saturday and left on Sunday but promised to return. At the same time announce ISIS responsibility for multiple suicide attacks in Baghdad last weekend.
The American influence on the Iraqi Government – which increased considerably after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003 – dwindled after the complete withdrawal of us military forces the end of 2011, leaving the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
After the spread of ISIS around Iraq in 2014, the White House helped coordinate the departure of Al-Maliki from power and the rise of Prime Minister Haider Abadi, and at the same time began air strikes against extremist organization. And while Americans officials still support Abadi, they worry it weakened by political opponents.
The concern was reflected in a series of recent visits by us officials including Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter.
Carter, recently said that the position of very strong politically, Abadi repeated u.s. support for his leadership. But experts say the United States control over events has diminished for some time.
Jeffrey James says fellow Washington Institute for Near East policy, who served as Ambassador for the Obama administration in the United States influence "is not very large, we much attention at the highest levels, but we don't make a lot of
Adhere to the same levels as an example – according to him – us military involvement Ltd against the Islamic State. They know that we have an army of a million men but what does this army? We share a minimum of fighters. "
President Obama and military strategy of relying on Iraqi forces ISIS war with the help of American air strikes in implementing St, training, weapons and special operations.
American officials say that the unrest in Baghdad did not hinder the fight against the Islamic State and is not expected to affect the military offensive to retake the city of Mosul. This challenge proved difficult even when the Government is more stable, has repeatedly postponed connector recovery plans since the beginning of last year.
Trouble comes to Baghdad in a very bad time, where the United States is trying to maintain the ceasefire in Syria which Obama hopes to pave the way for an agreement on the transfer of political power in Damascus.
The White House says that the solution to the conflict in Syria and defeat Islamic State requires a political solution there. But the Islamic State still controls the important areas and Iraq Syria as his influence is spreading in the Middle East and North Africa. So the failure of the Iraqi Government and the return of hostilities in Syria — that got the United States endeavours to destroy – the face of ISIS.
Jeffrey added that Iraq has a history of faltering on the brink of chaos and then goes back to the status quo, "Iraq up to a certain point and then bounces back, but it is not known whether it will recur again or not."
