US President Donald Trump called on his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterti to visit Washington in a "cordial" meeting during which the two leaders discussed the "threat" of North Korea, the White House said in a statement.
"It was a very friendly conversation, during which the two leaders discussed the concerns of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on regional security, including the threat posed by North Korea," the statement said.
They also discussed "the fact that the Philippine government is fighting vigorously to rid the country of drugs, the scourge that affects many countries in the world."
Duterti is described as the "enemy" of former US President Barack Obama, where the Philippine president did not hide his feelings of resentment towards the United States and specifically resentment of Obama, because of Washington's criticism at the time of the violent drug war.
Duterti was widely criticized for his obscene language, telling Obama at the height of his emotions, "Go to hell."
He also described the former US president as "the son of a bitch," but later apologized for what he had done.
Duterti said earlier that US-Philippine relations could improve when President-elect Donald Trump took office.
