The South Korean newspaper Sunday reported North Korea's offer to former regime leader Saddam Hussein via an intermediary, billionaire casino gambling giant Stanley Ho Heng Sun, just days before the US invasion.
"In 1999, casino billionaires from Macau opened a casino in North Korea worth $ 233 million in Pyongyang near the headquarters of the ruling Communist Party after obtaining a license from the regime there," the newspaper said in a report.
"A few days before the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, Pyongyang offered asylum to the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and gave him a mountain in North Korea. The mediator in this deal was billionaire Stanley H.," he said.
"There is a real chance to prevent war and Saddam Hussein could step down two days before the start of the US-British bombing of the country and call for democratic elections, but Saddam rejected the offer," senior regime officials said at the time.
"The brother of the current president of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, who was recently killed, was a friend of my son Saddam Hussein (Uday and Qusay) who were also killed by US forces in July 2003," the report said.
