The Chinese government expressed "deep displeasure" at the approach of an American warship on Thursday from an artificial island set up by Beijing in the South China Sea.
"China has expressed strong dissatisfaction," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Jing Shuang said in a statement quoted by AFP on Friday.
A US official announced that the USS John McCain crashed six nautical miles from the island of Meshef in Meiji in Chinese, part of the disputed Spratles archipelago.
A Chinese frigate sent warnings to the US destroyer at least 10 times, the official said.
This is the third "freedom-of-navigation operation" carried out by the United States in the region since President Trump took office on Jan. 20.
China is demanding much of the South China Sea, which is also claimed by several countries, including Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Chinese ships had "expelled" the US ship after its warning.
"Such action constitutes a serious violation of China's sovereignty and security and jeopardizes the staff of both sides," he said.
"China has an indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and the surrounding waters," he said.
Jing accused the United States of "refusing to stabilize the South China Sea" and pushing for the militarization of the region.
"China is resolutely determined to protect its sovereignty over the territory and its maritime interests," he said.
The US move came four days after a Washington protest backed by Japan and Australia to build artificial islands in the South China Sea for military purposes.
It is also in a climate of extreme tension on the Korean Peninsula because of North Korea's ballistic missile program, while Washington calls on Beijing to work to limit the activity of its unruly ally.
