German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that Turkey was quickly moving away from the rule of law and expressed concern about the arrest of German citizens in the country.
German Foreign Minister Ziegmar Gabriel said earlier that Turkey would never become a member of the European Union for as long as Erdogan ruled, accusing him of not taking the EU accession talks seriously.
On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused German politicians of indulging in what he called "populism" after Chancellor Angela Merkel said she would seek to end Ankara's accession talks with the EU, but expressed hope that the tense relations would improve.
On Sunday, Germany rejected a formal request from Turkey to freeze the assets of members of the network of US-based cleric Fathullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of masterminding the failed coup attempt last year.
The move has further worsened strained relations between NATO allies after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would act decisively against Turkey's arrest of German citizens on political charges. Ending 29/34
