    [ltr]The Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt on Saturday apologized for not receiving US Vice President Mike Bens this month after Washington decided to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to transfer the US embassy to it.[/ltr]
    [ltr]In a statement received by Mawazine News, the church said that "the Pope of Egypt's Copts, Tawadros II, announced his apology for receiving US Vice President Mike Bens this month."[/ltr]
    [ltr]The statement added that "the pope's position came in view of the decision taken by the American administration regarding Jerusalem and without regard to the feelings of millions of Arab peoples."[/ltr]
    [ltr]Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayeb announced on Friday (December 8, 2017) that he refused to meet US Vice President Mike Bens on the backdrop of Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transfer the US embassy to it.[/ltr]
    [ltr]US President Donald Trump acknowledged Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel on the evening of Wednesday, 6 December 2017. "It is time to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," he said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Trump added that his declaration marks the beginning of a new approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stressing that Jerusalem will become the seat of the Israeli government, the Knesset and the Supreme Court.[/ltr]

    [ltr]Dozens of Arab and Islamic countries have witnessed mass demonstrations in protest against US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the US Embassy to Israel, while major clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli occupying forces in several areas of the occupied West Bank.[/ltr]
