The Zimbabwean opposition leader living abroad (Roy Bennett) and four others were killed in a helicopter crash in a remote area in northern New Mexico, officials and a political party said.
New York police said on Thursday that the crash of the Huey helicopter in an area near Raton in New Mexico overnight killed Bennett, 60, his wife Heather Bennett, 55, and James Coleman Dodd, 57, of Colorado and Charles Reeland Burnett, 61, from Texas and Paul Cobb, 67, from Texas.
Bennett, treasurer of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), was a key figure in Zimbabwe's political scene and spent time in prison under President Robert Mugabe.
He recently told CNN that his country would not allow itself to be ruled by a dictatorial regime again.
"Roy was a strong and dedicated fighter for democratic change in Zimbabwe," the MDC said.
The party added that although it was white, Bennett was struggling for the rights of black Zimbabweans and was called Pachidu, a word in the Shona of Zimbabwe, meaning "together" or "one of us."
The US National Transportation Safety Council said it was investigating the incident
