CNN quoted an unnamed source as saying Washington was considering a strike on eight targets in Syria, including two Syrian airports, a research center and a chemical weapons facility.
According to the source, the Syrian regime's army transferred large parts of its aircraft to Russian-controlled airports, hoping that Washington would not hit the airports.
The White House said US President Donald Trump had not yet made his "final decision" on how to respond to a supposed chemical weapons attack in Syria after a meeting on Thursday with his senior national security advisers.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump would later hold talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macaron and British Prime Minister Theresa May on possible action by allies.
