North Korea's Nodun Sinmun newspaper said today that the statement was made by Bashar al-Assad during the credentials ceremony of the new North Korean ambassador to Damascus .
"President Assad announced that the foundations of the friendly relations between the two countries were laid down by the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, indicating his intention to visit North Korea later and hold a meeting with Kim Jong-un."
Assad also expressed his confidence in the success of the process of unification of the two Koreas.
"The Syrian government will continue to support the policies and actions of the North Korean authorities in full and will expand and deepen friendly relations with North Korea," the paper quoted Assad as saying.
