    The UN special representative for Iraq, Jan Kubic, on Wednesday expressed serious concern over casualties during protests he described as violent over the lack of vital public services in Basra province.
    He called on the authorities to avoid the use of disproportionate and lethal force against demonstrators, to protect the people of Basra and ensure human rights in the protection of law and order, and called for an investigation into those responsible for the violence.
    He also called for every effort to be made to respond to the legitimate demands of demonstrators to provide clean water and electricity supplies.
    Kubic urged political leaders, the newly elected House of Representatives to carry out their duties and act responsibly and without delay, including taking all necessary steps to agree on the formation of a new national government and support for reform that will respond quickly and effectively to the needs of long-standing citizens and fulfill their basic demands of water Electricity, and achieving the longer-term goal of creating jobs and a decent life.
    Long-term stability and improved economic performance are important, he said, adding that addressing these challenges lies with political leaders who have to unite the word and work together for the greater good.
    The leader of the National Coalition Iyad Allawi, on Wednesday, the need to speed up the situation in the province of Basra calmly and verbally and set specific timetables to meet the demands of the demonstrators, especially the basic ones and to find solutions to existing problems without delay.

    Allawi also called on the commander-in-chief of the armed forces to protect the sons of Basra and hold accountable the perpetrators of the killing of demonstrators, surprised, "Is it up to the people of Basra to pay dear blood for demanding the provision of the simplest requirements for a decent life."
    Events have accelerated in the province of Basra, oil-rich southernmost of Iraq, which is witnessing demonstrations for several weeks in protest against the deterioration of services After the killing of a number of demonstrators and dozens injured by the security forces demanded the tribes and the face and deputies to dismiss the commander of operations Jamil al-Shammari.
     

    The Iraqi Health Ministry announced at dawn today that five demonstrators were killed, 41 others wounded and 27 security forces injured in the events in Basra.
