    [rtl]The United States has warned Iran that it will "respond swiftly and decisively" to any attacks by Tehran agents in Iraq that could result in American casualties or damage to US installations.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]The statement issued by the press secretary of the White House, Iran, that it did not intervene to prevent attacks in recent days on the US consulate in Basra and the compound of the US Embassy in Baghdad.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]"Iran has not acted to stop these attacks by agents in Iraq supported by funding, training and weapons," the statement said.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]"The United States will consider the regime in Tehran responsible for any attack resulting in casualties among our personnel or damage to US government facilities," he said.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]The statement warned that America "will respond quickly and decisively in defense of the lives of Americans."[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Three mortar shells landed inside the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, where the US embassy is located, on Friday, but caused no injuries or damage, according to the Iraqi army.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]It was the first such attack in several years on the Green Zone, which houses parliament, government and foreign embassies.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]The US consulate is in Basra near the airport, which was attacked by rockets on Saturday. There were no reports of damage or casualties.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]The angry protests in Basra against political corruption erupted, and angry protesters stormed Iraqi government buildings last week.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]They also fiercely attacked Iran and held it responsible for the worsening situation in Basra, setting fire to the Iranian consulate, and chanting slogans against Tehran and its influence.[/rtl]
