German Economy Minister Peter Altmeyer announced on Sunday his government's suspension of arms exports to Saudi Arabia, calling for a unified European position on the issue of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside his consulate in Istanbul.
"The German government is currently refusing to export more arms to Saudi Arabia because of the recent admission of the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its consulate in Istanbul," the German economy minister said Monday. He called for a unified European stance on Saudi Arabia in this case.
The minister said in statements that "the federal government is currently refusing to ratify the export of more arms to Saudi Arabia," but in response to a question on whether to stop the existing exports? "I will not give speculation," he said.
He called for a "united European position" on Khashoggi's death, noting that "only in the case of European countries can influence the government of Riyadh," saying that "the cessation of Germany's arms exports at a time when other countries fill the gap will not produce results "He said.
German Foreign Minister Hiku Mas said in televised remarks on Sunday that there was no basis for any decision to sell arms to Saudi Arabia after the circumstances of the killing of the Saudi journalist.
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the German Foreign Ministry revealed the Saudi ambassador's invitation to attend a meeting of the ministry to discuss the repercussions of the killing of journalist Khashoggi.
"The Foreign Ministry is due to hold a dialogue soon," Maria Adebar told reporters on Monday.
A government document showed last September that Berlin had decided to approve an arms shipment to Riyadh after it made clear it would stop arms sales to countries involved in the conflict in Yemen.
The arms shipment, the first shipment to Riyadh since March, when the coalition of Chancellor Angela Merkel banned the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia because of the war in Yemen.
