Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan will arrive in Tehran on Saturday to discuss mediation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Iranian media reported.
This comes after Khan announced in a statement on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly recently that he plays at the request of US President Donald Trump and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the role of mediator to reduce the escalation with Iran.
"I cannot disclose anymore, except that we are trying to do that and are mediating," Khan said at the time.
"We also talked with Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and he asked me to talk to the Iranian president, where he knew I would meet him. President Trump also asked me if we could ease the tension and maybe even reach a new agreement."
Khan said he conveyed this question to Rouhani, adding: "Yes, we are doing everything we can, and this process is continuing and I cannot reveal more than I said."
The announcement of the Pakistani mediation comes at a time of great tension in the region between Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies on the one hand and Iran on the other.
This tension intensified sharply after Saudi Arabia was attacked on September 14, a large-scale attack on the oil facilities of the giant "Aramco" in the east of the country, the Abqaiq oil refinery and the Khurais migration field, adopted by the forces of the Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi group Ansar Allah, which said the operation Carried out by 10 drones.
