     Baghdad / Range

Interior Minister Qassim al-Araji said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia had formally asked him and the prime minister to intervene to broker an end to tensions with Iran. Speaking at a press conference with his Iranian counterpart in the Iranian capital, Araji said after signing a memorandum of understanding on the fortieth visit.
Araji and Abadi visited Saudi Arabia recently, on two separate visits, at an official invitation.
Araji said he told Saudi Arabia that improving ties with Iran would begin with respect for Iranian pilgrims and allow them to visit the Bekaa cemetery.
"Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has officially asked him to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia to curb tension between the two countries," the interior minister said during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Abdul Ridha Rahmani Fadhli.
He added that he informed the Saudi side of the Iranian side's opinion that the first step that could lead to easing tensions between Tehran and Riyadh is to show respect to the Iranian pilgrims and treat them in the best way, and allow them to visit the cemetery of Baqi.
The Araji said the Saudi side promised to implement this, and stressed that Baqi is now open to Iranian pilgrims. He stressed that Iraq believes in the need for friendly relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, because they contribute to strengthening the security of the region.
On January 14, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari revealed that he had conveyed messages between Tehran and Riyadh in an ongoing effort to ease tensions between the two countries, commissioned by Riyadh, but Saudi Arabia lied to him.
The relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia witnessed a sharp deterioration after the death of hundreds of Iranian pilgrims in a tragic stampede occurred during the Hajj in 2015.
In another context, Araji said that "
"The meeting with the Iranian side was concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for a year to regulate the entry of Iranian visitors during the Arbaeen decrees." The interior minister of Iran and Iraq signed yesterday a memorandum of understanding on cooperation Security
arrangements for visitors and monitoring the borders of the two countries.
"It is worth noting that millions of Iranian visitors go to the To Iraq each year to perform the decrees of visiting the 40s in the twentieth of Safar and visit the shrines of imams in Iraq. The agreement provides for Iran to take necessary measures on how to organize the 40 decrees, provide security for visitors and monitor the borders of the two countries.
