The Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights accused the Iraqi authorities of launching a campaign of arrests in the center of Baghdad.
According to eyewitnesses, masked men in government vehicles arrested a number of protesters in al-Allawi and al-Salhiya areas on their way to Tahrir Square.
Meanwhile, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the renewed daily clashes between security forces and protesters and events that it described as regrettable in the province of Dhi Qar Shatra district and the market of the Senate on Monday, killing two people and injuring 23 others and the arrest of 283 people, including 156 released.
It also condemned in a statement "cutting off the Internet and electricity and using live bullets, rubber and tear gas by the security forces towards the demonstrators," calling on the security forces to "play their part in protecting the demonstrators."
The BBC quoted witnesses as saying they had heard heavy gunfire near the Liberation Bridge in central Baghdad, indicating that the shooting stopped after about ten minutes.
On Monday, dozens of demonstrators crossed Al-Ahrar Bridge in central Baghdad from Rusafa towards Karkh and gathered near the square near the ministries of justice and culture and the headquarters of the Iraqi government channel.
The demonstrators chanted anti-government slogans, and then burned pictures of the leader of Fatah bloc, the second largest bloc in parliament Hadi al-Amiri, located on one of the headquarters of his Badr movement, but was prevented by riot police from advancing.
In a tweet on Monday night, the UN envoy in Iraq, Jenin Hennes-Blachart, condemned the ongoing violence: “The horrific bloodshed continues in Iraq. Violence only produces violence. Peaceful protesters must be protected. This is a time of national dialogue. ”
