Muqtada al-Sadr proposes a "popular referendum" to choose a prime minister for Iraq

The head of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Iraq, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , on Friday called for the selection of a new prime minister in Iraq by popular referendum, hours after Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced his intention to submit his government's resignation to parliament .
"His resignation does not mean the end of corruption," Sadr said in a statement posted on his Twitter account. "He suggested that the prime minister's nomination should be through a referendum on five candidates ."
He also suggested that "the new prime minister choose his cabinet members far from parties, blocs and militias" and "work to establish the Anti-Corruption Council ."
He called for "activating the role of the judiciary", "to continue peaceful demonstrations and not to retreat," and to give friendly countries and others "the opportunity for Iraqis to determine their fate ."
Earlier Friday, Abdul Mahdi announced his resignation after Shiite cleric Ali al-Sistani called on lawmakers to reconsider their support for a government shaking over the volcano of unrest for weeks .
The move marks the latest turning point in an unprecedented crisis in the country two months ago and has been struggling to recover from decades of conflict, unrest and sanctions .
