    H5N1 was first discovered in 1996 in China, and it is particularly deadly to poultry.

    The virus, often called bird flu, causes severe respiratory pain in birds and is contagious to humans, according to the World Health Organization.
     
    Bird flu has claimed the lives of about 400 people, after it spread to Asia, Africa, North America and parts of Europe.
