After Iraq's Supreme Federal Court on Monday upheld the results of the country's October parliamentary elections, resolving a dispute that has halted the formation of the new government as Iran-backed militias battled for electoral gains.

potential ally

The New York Times considered the court's decision a victory for the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, who is considered a potential ally of the United States in Iraq.

Sadr's movement won 73 out of 329 seats in parliament, more than any other, up from 54 in 2018. It easily defeated a coalition of Iran-aligned militias led by the Fatah Alliance.
As for the Al-Fateh alliance and its allies, Sadr's victory has upset the traditional balance of Shiite forces that have dominated Iraqi politics since the fall of Saddam Hussein nearly 20 years ago, and threatens to undermine Iranian influence in parliament, according to the newspaper.

Strong chest role

Al-Sadr, an Iraqi nationalist whose forces once fought the Americans, is considered more anti-Iranian, and is ready to play a powerful role not only in parliament but also in choosing the next prime minister.
Al-Sadr thanked the court, the election commission, and the Iraqi people in a tweet on Twitter on Monday, and called for "the formation of a national majority government that is neither Eastern nor Western."

In a speech to the losing political parties on November 18, al-Sadr warned the militias against "corrupting the democratic process in Iraq" and demanded that they disband their militias and hand over their weapons to the Iraqi National Army.
Al-Sadr was once so opposed to the Americans in Iraq that the United States ordered his killing and later decided not to, according to the newspaper.
But al-Sadr came to oppose Iranian interference in Iraq, and indicated in a speech he gave after the elections that foreign embassies are welcome as long as they do not interfere in Iraq's affairs.
After the election results were ratified, the factions representing Iraq's Kurdish and Sunni Muslim minorities, who had been waiting for the outcome to negotiate or form alliances, could be part of the new government and plunge into the fray.

new faces

Political analysts said they believed the Sadrists had achieved great success by taking advantage of a new electoral law that had reduced the traditional power of large parties and made way for new faces by increasing the number of electoral districts. The Sadrist organization studied the electoral map closely and made sure to present candidates who did not end up facing each other.
But they weren't the only beneficiaries: Independent candidates who emerged from the anti-government protest movement, which swept the streets in late 2019, won few seats.
While Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations envoy to Iraq, praised the parliamentary elections as "generally peaceful" and good in management and organization.
