DIRECTOR OF THE IRAQI AIR FORCE MEDIA, AMER AL-JABRI

The Director of Iraqi Meteorological Information, Amer Al-Jabri, warned of the current climate situation in Iraq, especially desertification and the lack of rain, indicating that the situation has called for regional intervention, calling on the current government to take serious steps in this regard.
Al-Jabri said, on Tuesday (May 10, 2022), that "we have an escalation of dust and local and international dust storms, which the country is currently affected by are international storms from North Africa, specifically from the Sahara, and passed over a number of Arab countries, and clearly affected Iraq." .
He attributed this to “the result of wind speed, accompanied by warm air masses, high temperatures, the country’s lack of rain, especially the southern and central regions, the large desertification in Iraq, the lack of water and lakes, and the lack of green belt and vegetation cover.”
Al-Jabri indicated that desertification, with the exception of the desert in the western region, “has increased by a large percentage, and has become a problem through the bulldozing of agricultural lands and their transformation into residential complexes. the side and reduce the intensity, in addition to the fragility of the soil and the lack of cohesion of the land due to the lack of rain.”
He pointed out that Iraq, "according to reports, is among the first five Arab or global countries affected by climate change," stressing that "the majority of Iraq's governorates have been bulldozed and transformed into residential complexes and government departments, including the capital, Baghdad, which turned into a barren area." .
He pointed out that "the Razzaza and Sawa lakes have reached a dangerous stage of drought, along with some rivers in Diyala Governorate," stressing that this problem "is no longer local, but rather global."
The Director of Al-Anwaa Media, called on the current government to “consider and work hard on this issue,” and believes that this now requires “regional intervention.”
Regarding their role as a scientific department, Al-Jabri indicated that “the Information Department had previously provided warnings to the weather forecast, the Council of Ministers and the crisis cell within it, and the ministries of environment, water resources, health and agriculture, as well as civil defense for years,” adding that “nothing has been taken on the ground.”
Al-Jabri warned of the repercussions of this climate file on the Iraqi citizen and the economy, which he described as “very dangerous.”
And on the extent to which Iraq was greatly affected by the dust storm, he explained that the neighboring Arab countries have “proactive strategies, artificial lakes, trees and plants, especially in desert areas, such as olives, to deal with winds, dust and any air depressions.”
He noted that "there is currently a project in Karbala for the Abbasid and Husseiniya shrines, and it is a very successful project, represented by the Green Belt Operation," and he believed that this experience is supposed to be transmitted to all Iraqi provinces.
As for the most prominent obstacles that appear between the ministries, according to Al-Jabri, “the lack of financial allocations and manpower, the lack of sufficient quantities of water for the agricultural project by the Ministry of Water Resources, as well as the lack of sustainability after the project construction process.”
Al-Jabri believes that “committees should be formed in the Council of Ministers or one of the government ministries, such as agriculture, environment or water resources.”
Regarding the decisions of climate conferences, such as the Paris Conference in 2015 and Glasgow 2021, Al-Jabri said that they “led to alternative energy and reduced emissions that contribute to global warming,” noting that Iraq “lacks alternative energy, and Basra Governorate is a source of smoke and gases emitted.”
And he indicated that "it is possible to exploit the wind and limit the issue of alternative electric energy associated with solar panels," adding that Iraq "has not implemented the alternative energy system yet."
With regard to solutions, the Director of Al-Awwaa Media said, “There must be solutions and specialized and diplomatic committees, with regard to water files with neighboring countries such as Iran and Turkey, locally and internationally, to work seriously and fully follow up from the Presidency of the State, given the importance and gravity of the file.
