To end Saddam's practices against groups, including Faili.. Parliamentarian demands amending nationality before the census
Shafaq News/ Member of the Iraqi Parliament, Zahra Al-Bajari said, on Wednesday, that any attempt by the relevant ministries to conduct a population census must be accompanied by the amendment of the Nationality and Personal Status Law to correct errors in names and titles that occurred due to the "sectarian" policies of previous governments such as the Baath regime led by the former president Saddam Hussein.
And Al-Bajari added in a statement today, that "the new census should cancel the old census, as happened in the previous censuses, and thus correct errors in names, titles, birth and others that occurred due to Saddam's sectarian and oppressive policies."
And she continued by saying that "if the census does not address the errors and manipulation that occurred in the records of registration and souls with names, births, surnames and restrictions due to people fleeing from conscription, executions, deportation and others, there is no benefit from it."
Al-Bajari asked, "How can a population census be conducted when we live in exceptional circumstances in all fields? How is this done while there are still disputed areas and there are still displaced families, not to mention those who traveled for sectarian and political reasons used by the former Baathist top-down regime against the Shiite majority?".
The parliamentarian also indicated that many Faili Kurds and other Iraqis changed their names, surnames, and births for political reasons and to escape from the brutality of the Baathist regime.
The Ministry of Planning has recently announced that the initial date for implementing the general population and housing census in Iraq will be in October of next year 2023, and the Iraqi government has ratified it.
