Today, Thursday, the Ministry of Water Resources confirmed that solving the problem of water shortage in the governorates requires removing all violations of river water to ensure the arrival of fair quantities, while warning that the water storage has decreased by 60% compared to what it was last year.
Hatem Hamid, director of the National Center for Water Resources Management, said, "Iraq is experiencing a water scarcity crisis that continues for the third year in a row due to the lack of water imports and the use of strategic water storage."
He added, "This year, accordingly, the winter and summer agricultural plans have been reduced by 50%, and there are water expenditures that have been prepared to ensure that water reaches the marshes."
He continued, "But unfortunately, the abuses on the waters of the marshes in some provinces have caused a decrease in quantities and a clear shortage," noting that "the Al-Hawizeh Marsh in particular experienced a decrease in its levels due to the cutting off of the Iranian side of the Karkheh River from the Iraqi side, and the releases are limited to the Al-Musharrah, Al-Kahla and Al-Awal rivers." It has many violations by citizens, and we are trying to remove it by communicating with the security services.”
He stressed that "the Iraqi side is communicating with the Iranian and Turkish sides with the aim of increasing water flows from the two countries and reducing the damage to scarcity," explaining that "the levels of the Diyala River have decreased to 20%, and the Karkheh and Karun rivers have been completely cut off more than a year ago, and all of these are causing major crises."
And he continued, "Three weeks ago, the Iranian Vice President visited Iraq and promised a quick meeting that brings together the ministers of agriculture, resources and environment in the two countries, but this meeting did not materialize, and the Turkish side also promised a visit last May, but it also did not materialize, and we are still managing the crisis from the Iraqi strategic treasury, and this led to a shortage 60% more than it was last year.
Regarding the file of abuses on rivers, Hamid explained that "the percentage of abuses is very large, and our employees are confronted with violence while trying to remove them, and the security forces are exposed, and if we can remove all the abuses, we will be able to deliver water to all governorates in a fair manner."
